High Pressure Valve Provides Solution for Chemical Company
Vortex HDPV2 replaces existing butterfly valve BASF is an integrated global chemical company. Their site in Redditch, UK, specializes in the production of flooring systems including concrete repair, structural waterproofing, traffic repair, car park decks, roofing waterproofing and structural grouts. The manufacturing process includes bulk storage, batch weighing and pneumatic transfer of a large variety of ingredients (typically sands cements, lime and coarse aggregates) to a large vacuum receiving hopper. From here materials are discharged to a mixer then discharged to a high speed packing process. BASF had experienced problems with the existing butterfly valve on the outlet of their vacuum batch receiving hopper. Some of the coarse materials, typically quartz and flintag, are very abrasive with sharp jagged edges and have a high bulk density. The butterfly valve blade was unable to open against a head load of high density compacted material. BASF identified the Vortex HDPV2 slide gate valve as ideal solution

Especially the empty detection in large silos and containers filled with heavy bulk solids is not possible with most measuring devices, as the heavy load damages the jib of the measuring device at full filling. Even the normally utilized rotary blade level switches with approx. 10 mm shaft diameter can be used for such applications with costly protection roofs only. Especially for this kind of applications MOLLET has developed rotary blade level indicators with a shaft diameter of 20 mm, which is unique in the world. Many discharge processes that require product flow to be regulated are straightforward in nature. The silo truck has to be filled from the stationary silo safely and with a greater level of accuracy without generating excessive amounts of dust. In addition, filling times have to be cut and the loading process made as cost-effective as possible, making the equipment usually deployed for dosing too slow or too expensive. As modern logistics can now handle more than just single-product silos, the discharge equipment being used also has to fit various product characteristics (e.g. flow properties, pouring density, susceptibility to “bridging”). The vibrating dosing valve is the perfect tool for a range of discharge tasks, some of them highly challenging. Use as a discharge valve Vidos valves can be combined with sequenced locks and used as discharge valves in feed pipes, for instance, with the lock acting as the discharge unit and even high differential pressures able to be circumvented without the risk of air pockets. This significantly reduces performance losses due to leaking air as well as service and maintenance costs. In this case, the vibration of the Vidos valve ensures even dosing into the feed pipe. The feed rate can be optimised by adjusting the cycle time of the sequenced lock and the opening angle of the Vidos discharge valve. The Service Center was first opened in 2005 at Bohle’s headquarters in Ennigerloh. On more than 500 m², the center offers numerous possibilities to test new products and develop and optimize processes. A complete pharmaceutical production line is available at the Service Center to develop and test machines and processes. This makes it possible to work under actual conditions at pilot plant scale. A number of engineers from Dinnissen Process Technology are investigating the use of Virtual Reality in order to already provide the customer an experience of the new plant. They walk together virtually through the factory, which still only consists of bits and bytes. At Industrial Processing and together with Vroom, Dinnissen is demonstrating this new application live in the Factory of the Future. A small group of engineers is currently working with virtual reality in a research phase. The way of drawing in SolidWorks doesn’t change for them; however they have to learn to make the transition from 3D CAD to virtual reality. Synutra, one of the most important Chinese producers of baby food, has erected a “greenfield” plant in Carhaix, France. For this purpose Dinnissen has implemented a complete dry mix plant. Dinnissen delivered due to their “lean gravity mixing concept” a wholistic concept for 14 T/h baby food, corresponding to the latest technology in the matter of hygiene and quick cleaning. Synutra looked for a mixer with a capacity of 6500 liter, with the highest hygiene requirements. Dinnissen designed a special layout for this, at which the cleaning of the mixer and the mixer hopper is guaranteed even beneath the wheel-away shafts. They developed a Pegasus® mixer with a capacity of 6500 liter with big pivoted flaps, that allow an easy access to all components of the mixer that have to get cleaned.
