Level sensor VEGAPULS 6X -Security first at VEGA
The VEGAPULS 6X radar sensor is the world’s first level sensor with built-in cyber security features, in compliance with Industrial Cyber Security Standard IEC 62443-4-2. VEGA, the Black Forest manufacturer of level, switching and pressure instrumentation, is on a security mission. In January 2023, it delivered to its customers what is unquestionably the world’s first level sensor with built-in cyber security features. With this new development VEGA wants to send a strong message, namely, that it recognizes the increasing threat of cyber criminality in industry and is taking action to combat it. From the outside, you wouldn’t see anything different or unusual: The VEGAPULS 6X radar sensor, together with its documentation, fits perfectly into its tailor-made carton which, at the end of the packaging line, gets its shipping label. Address: A chemical company in northern Hesse, Germany. But what the customer receives is something quite different from all the other level sensors previously available in the market. For the first time ever, this sensor comes with cyber protection as an integral component. It was developed in compliance

Video: How do sensors contribute to cyber security?
The VEGAPULS 6X radar level sensor has been designed according to the latest IT security standard IEC 62443-4-2. In view of the increasing digitalisation in industry, an extremely important point is effective protection against cyber attacks. In industry, production facilities are becoming more and more interconnected and use digital status retrieval on all devices and systems. This makes them vulnerable in a new way. To fulfil the highest cyber security standards currently available in the process industry, the VEGAPULS 6X radar level sensor has been designed according to the latest IT security standard IEC 62443-4-2. During a walk through the VEGA IT department, Jürgen and Stefan explain what has to be considered already in the development stage in order to create a secure sensor.

Contactless and maintenance-free measurement of bulk solids
Contactless and maintenance-free measurement of bulk solids
The Friedrich Köster GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik-Eisengießerei in Heide manufactures castings of iron, steel and non-ferrous metals, sometimes in small batches, sometimes as individual castings of various sizes. The foundry sand required for this is transported, still hot, to large silos after use. Here it is stored and cooled until it is needed again for further processing steps. In order to reliably measure the level in the silos and thus their total content, reliable level measurement is required. Until now, guided radar sensors were used for this purpose. These old sensors, however, intermittently failed to transmit the measurement signals: Due to the very long cable probes, they had difficulties measuring in the sand and sometimes even stopped working completely. The necessary repairs could only be carried out when the silos were empty. This was not only inconvenient, it also caused delays in the production process again and again. VEGAPULS 31 radar sensors

Whitepaper: Rod sources for radiometric measurements Long-lasting process quality due to advantageous measuring arrangement.
Whitepaper: Rod sources for radiometric measurements
Long-lasting process quality due to advantageous measuring arrangement. A rod source/point detector arrangement offers numerous advantages that cannot be achieved with a point source/rod detector arrangement. Due to less frequent production downtimes, simpler and thus more economical spare parts inventory, increased long-term and temperature stability and consistent process quality, the higher acquisition costs are mitigated within a short period of time. Introduction When planning a radiometric measurement, the technical design is fundamental. It is created and developed based on process conditions, process geometry, customer input as well as local background radiation, site conditions, and mounting space limitations. For the design of radiometric level or bulk flow measurements, a choice must be made between two arrangements: a point source with a rod detector, or a rod source and a point detector, see fig 1. Due to the slightly lower purchase price, the arrangement with a point source and rod detector is frequently selected.

From classic to innovative level measurement Mechanical - non-contact - guided microwave Modern, high-quality technologies ensure a continuous stress-free production process in plants. When detecting filling levels in silos and material processing processes. Sensors with high compatibility for different process vessels offer multiple support. It is always depending on the processing stage. The material to be controlled may be of a different nature or used for different demands on the measuring technology to be used. The UWT range offers capacitive measuring technology, oscillators and mechanical solutions for use in both solids and liquids. The solutions for the soldering system and non-contact radar technology were extended by an innovative TDR product line in continuous measurement. Depending on the process conditions and the medium to be measured. The appropriate sensor technology can be configured from a comprehensive stock. A cement manufacturer, producing in Poland has already implemented the guided radar in some warehouse processes. Precise level

Protection Plus with innovative corrosion protection Capacitive RF probe with full coating protection
Protection Plus with innovative corrosion protection
Capacitive RF probe with full coating protection In power plants, the demands made on the fill level sensors can be very high due to the fact that the sensors come into contact with aggressive media such as sulphur oxides, heavy metals or even acids. Where limit switches are used for dust detection in flue gas cleaning, they need to be robust enough in order to deliver reliable and consistent performance. Often maintenance costs or replacement of these sensors can be very high due to their quality not being adequate to meet the demands and so they achieve only a short operating life. This is particularly evident in measurement tasks in flue gas cleaning within waste incineration plants. Longer service life due to increased corrosion resistance UWT has further developed the RFnivo® 3100 capacitive level limit switch for this type of measurement task in the dust extraction of flue gases so that it meets and withstands the demanding conditions. All process-contacting parts of the sensor have been designed to be
