Upgrade of potato and pea starch silo Emsland-Stärke Emlichheim
At the Emsland-Stärke in Emlichheim, Germany, ESI has finished the upgrade of a potato and pea starch silo built by Weibull in the early ‘70s. “Combining our technology with the Weibull silo and the requested infeed/output system from a previous supplier was quite a challenge. But now this silo is compliant with today’s requirements and ready for operation over the coming decades,” said Maarten Appelman, the After Sales Manager at ESI. Global supplier for food processing industry Emsland-Stärke Emlichheim is the main production facility, as well as the headquarters, of the globally operating Emsland Group. The Emsland Group develops, produces and markets a wide portfolio of products derived from potatoes and peas, including starch products, potato flakes and granules, as well as proteins and fibers. With a history of almost a hundred years, one of their first potato starch silos needed a thorough upgrade, and all changes needed to be strictly ATEX compliant. Feasibility first Appelman explained, “As most Weibull silos are custom made with technology from almost 50 years ago, we first started

Large-scale homogenization in mammoth silos Thesis on blending in large silos
Large-scale homogenization in mammoth silos
Thesis on blending in large silos This thesis focuses on the applicability of large-scale homogenization in mammoth silos. Mammoth silos are frequently used for the storage of both free flowing and cohesive materials up to volumes of 100,000 m3. For the upgrading of free flowing bulk materials blending piles can be used. However, to date, an upgrading facility for cohesive bulk material is not available. Adding the functionality of homogenization to a mammoth silo means that both free flowing and cohesive materials can be stored and homogenized under climatological controlled circumstances. The competitiveness of homogenizing in mammoth silos versus blending piles depends on the achievable rate of homogenization and the required homogenization efficiency for successive processes. Investment costs and available space are also relevant factors: there is an increasing market for compact and indoor storage facilities in densely populated areas. Experiments were set up to investigate the suitability

Weighing data provides easy access to process automation
Weighing data provides easy access to process automation
PENKO Engineering recently completed the SGM800 Digitizer range. The SGM800 Digitizer is a range of compact modules mounted on a DIN rail and that seamlessly connect load cells and strain gauges using industrial process control. Connecting weighing instruments directly to automation, is one of the action points of Industry 4.0 and Smart Industry. Also weighing data are important components of Big Data. For this, it is necessary that all the weighing data collected in the field, also becomes available at a higher IT level. To achieve this with as many companies as possible, PENKO Engineering now offers the SGM800 Digitizer: a range of certified communications modules for different protocols which can be used simultaneously for decentralized control. Protocols What PENKO first has tackled, are various protocols for industrial networks. PENKO solves this with six different versions of the SGM Digitizer, As a standard all six versions communicate via USB and RS485. The

Weighing equipment made smarter.
NEW. A load cell junction b It seems too good to be true, a system that can find out if independent load cells are functional or not. Even better,- a system that can automatically adjusting the calibration when a load cell or the weighing indicator has been changed! Most measuring and weighing systems, based on strain gage load cells, consist of more than one sensor. These sensors are usually connected analogue by a junction box. Since the sensors are all connected parallel, the average measurement of the sensors is sent to the system. This way of operation works fine, until a load cell breaks down. The challenge usually is to find out which of the loadcells is defect. This is usually not sufficiently identified and the system continues to operate with a deficiency. In order to overcome this drawback we developed an ”intelligent” load cell cable junction box, the SIGMA4. During a system test, the junction box and the indicator measures the load cell output per sensor, compares this against
